Funny Job Stories Reddit Cs Carreryu Questions

These success stories are getting to my head man.

All of them are 6 years from high school to six figures and meanwhile it took me 6 years to go from high school to unemployed college dropout who's waiting on an interview for a minimum wage programming job that I'm not even sure if gonna get.

If you all wanna see what failure looks like, I'm right here.

This isn't really a jab at them, I'm sure everyone involved worked a lot harder than I did, but I don't know anymore

Everyone has a different path, the only person you should compare yourself to is who you were before!

level 2

Take inspiration from others and only compare oneself to the past version of oneself.

This OP.

You don't know where the other people are located. Maybe their area has a better job market. Maybe they know people who helped them get their foot in the door.

Success isn't only measured by a job and salary. Someone could be rich financially and hate their lives. Look at all the famous people who have ended it too early. Try to stay positive and don't give up. Nothing ever comes to people who sit around and wait for it. You got this.

But then you'll end up with people who take a $17/hr job as a developer without seeing what other local developers make, and think they're the bees knees because it's such a big upgrade from their $12/hr supermarket job. Only to realize several years later- shoot, as a developer you're very underpaid! Getting some of the big picture still helps.

Thats some participation trophy shit IMO.

The world doesnt compare you to yourself, they compare you to your peers. It feels good to improve, but as long as this is a career subreddit lets not pretend thats all thats important.

Ever hear that saying, "believe nothing of what you hear and only half of what you see"?

level 2

Something about survivorship bias as well. I'm just not in a good state of mind right now.

level 2

Y'know I've never heard this but holy shit is that good. Thanks pal.

I'm not sure it's helpful to just suggest that most of the stories aren't true. No matter whether you believe the stories here or not, there's always people who have done something similar in real life, especially if OP graduated with a bunch of CS cohorts. It's much more productive to teach someone not to compare themselves with others than it is to just bank on successful people not existing lol

Minimum wage programming jobs? These are a thing?

level 2

I don't know until I negotiate, but Glassdoor suggests that it's pretty low pay, with the absolute lowest being literal minimum.

I have no leverage, so they can do whatever they want to me.

iam junior fullstack php(wordpress) dev, getting payed minimum wage, 3rd month in.

My first programming job paid $8/hour to write shitty Android apps for hospitals, police stations, municipalities, and schools. Worked there less than 2 months before getting hired at a salaried position for over 3x that amount. In that two month period I wrote 5 apps start to finish and completely overhauled the company's weather system, that's how shitty they were. But yeah those jobs exist.

level 2

Well there's the Student Assistant jobs at 12-14/hr if you work for the state (in US)

And yes, there's CS jobs in those jobs

Get off this subreddit. It's not worth it

It's good for some stuff, like getting your resume grilled or asking soft questions (use the search function first ty). Some regulars have been very helpful to me.

Learning what leetcode is and what it takes to get jobs in competitive areas has been useful too.

But if you are not in a good position academically/career wise/mentally, this place can fuck you up if you read it regularly. Much better to just come and go as you need. You don't need to read all the negativity or how much some dude is earning every day.
